January 16, 2011 update: The current DepEd secretary is Bro. Armin A. Luistro, FSC. He was appointed by President Noynoy Aquino in June 2010.
Edilberto de Jesus is the new Department of Education secretary. The Palace formally announced his appointment this afternoon. An experienced educator and not a politician, he is president of the Far Eastern University and member of the board of the Ateneo de Manila University. He also served as peace process adviser during the Aquino administration.
De Jesus takes over the position vacated by former Senator Raul Roco. Unlike Foreign Affairs secretary Blas Ople, the new DepEd secretary appears acceptable to various sectors, including the student movement. National Union of Students of the Philippines president and Tinig.com columnist Mong Palatino said while they clash with de Jesus on the tuition increase issue, the new secretary is their ally in the anti-ROTC issue.
Incidentally, de Jesus is the husband of my former boss, Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility executive director Melinda Quintos de Jesus.

Southeastern College is implementing a no permit no exam policy. I thought schools are not allowed by the DepEd to do that. Also they are charging P100 if parents are not able to pay the tuition fee after the grace period. I just want to know if they can do that. Is it even legal?
Request for action from DepEd Secretary:
My nephew is studying kindergarten in Dep Ed, Cebu City division. At the start of classes we were asked to pay P1,800 for the books. I thought its free in Dep Ed. I asked the school principal about this and she said its ordered by Dep Ed Education supervisor in charge of kindergarten. I learned from an employee in Dep Ed, Cebu City that this supervisor has already retired almost a year from now but is still assigned by the ASDS to handle the Kindergarten. Also I learn that this supervisor is still reporting everyday for almost a year in the Division Office of Cebu City and still occupies her former office together with her husband. I was also told that she refuses to turn over her office to her predecessor. There are many bad issues about this supervisor when she was in service; yet when she retired she continuously hold function and office. The employees of Dep Ed are obviously suspicious of her intention in staying in the office. Dep Ed, Cebu City want to be clarified on this matter. As guardian, I request also for proper action on contribution matter in the Kindergarten. Thank you.

Sir,
Natatakot na po ang mga bata at ang mga magulang nito dahil sa mga pagbabanta sa kanila… mahihirap pa naman mga tao ito at nasa lugar na malayo pero umaasa po kami na matutulungan nyo…
maraming salamat po
Dear Sir,
Magtatanong lang po kung ano pa po dapat namin gawin at kung sino ang dapat lapitan para po sana matulungan ang kapatid kong wala naman kakayahang ilapit sa abogado ang kasong ito;
Sa nakita ng Ina, lumapit ito sa bata at tinawag ang anak saka ito tumunghay;
pagkatapos ng pangyayaring ito instinct na nagalit ang Ina (Riza Escorel) ng bata sa Claire Basia at Nerlita Hayohay at sinabing wag na wag nilang sasaktan ang bata, pero sumagot ang Claire Basia na nakasuot madre at sinabi sa Ina ng Bata,” Lukaluka ka! luka ka luka ka!” kaya naman sa galit nitong Ina ng bata nasampal niya itong Claire na pinagsimulan ng kanilang away pero maraming naging saksi na Itong Claire Basia po at si Nerlita Hayohay na Teacher ng Grade 2 -A ay pinagtulungan ito Riza Escorel sa loob mismo ng School na yun halos malamog ang buong katawan;
. Ang alam ko po,concern ako sa kinabukasan ng bata, na nagkaroon takot na pumasok ng School. at maturuan din ng leksyon ang isang nakasuot madre na Claire Basia;
Nailapit na rin po ito sa DSWD sa lugar na yun pero ang payo po sa kanila ay naguubos lang ng oras at gagastos lang daw po, makipag areglo nalang daw sa barangay;
K+12? Are you ready with the classroom, teachers, books and more instructional materials needed for this year mass kindergarten enrollment?
DepED Officials think twice. This is not the solution
Give us the kind of education the other countries have.
As to less number of students per class,
valued instructional materials with sufficient books per pupils and it is the right kind of reference books they will use.

Hon Sec. Edilberto de Jesus:
Greetings!
First of all I would like to congratulate this new administration for being so transparent. I have been planning to do this letter for the past two years; but then I had that feeling before that no one will care or listen to my clamor.
Anyway, my problem is about the situation of the grade school pupils in our sitios; (Libuac Madsayap and Dahican Elementary Schools in Manay Davao Oriental…wherein, almost of the teachers in these sitios are really abusive and it really bothers me when i heard from the teachers cursing their pupils, shouting, and always absent from their respective classes. Some teachers even attended their classes thrice a week only and some are not even performing their duties even if they are in the school campus, laging tulog!
Their practice of making the students disciplined is not fair.Children are now emotionally scarred and learned nothing good values from them . I believe, the students should be respected and rightfully treated well . I hope you will be able to help us in this issues. God bless us.
Respectfully yours,
HYDEE MASANGUID
To Sec. Edilberto de Jesus,
Good day sir! i would like to ask for your attention regarding the problem occuring here in our Baranggay.recently we experience the flood cause by Ondoy and now we are experiencing problem for our children..we are one of the baranggay here in Laguna to be exact the school that we are fighting for our childrens welfare is named San Pedro Relocation Center National Highschool located here in Landayan San pedro Laguna…there have been news that this school will be closed but because of the protest of parents it wasn’t done but today to be exact we parents had our meeting in our baranggay hall to be informed that teachers in that school is forced to resigned and some are been transfered to other public school nearby..this actions are made with agenda that if they lessen the teachers there will be a qouta for students which means that most of the students who live near the school would no longer be accomodated by the school because teachers are lesser but if we consider the lower class of this baranggay that depend to this Public school so that they can send their children to school,but if this happen sending their children to public school that needs transportation would be a big problem for them.this problem would be their big reason to make their children stop and continue going to school..if this happen many children will lost the opportunity to have a good education as well their future..I admit i belong to the middle class of living I was writing you in concern for this people..I was asking for your attention regarding this matter..this is also a big concern to our country if we lost hundred of children who are Illiterate we will add up a hundred of filipino who are Jobless because of lack of Education.I believe your intentions are for the benefit of our Filipino children>>Thank you for your time and attention…Hope that this anomally will put to stop before the start of this school year…Thank you sir hope you can help with this problem…
