The Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA), University of the Arts Singapore presents “Prismatic: Ang Ah Tee,” an exhibition showcasing 40 recent works of illustrious NAFA alumnus and Cultural Medallion recipient Ang Ah Tee. Held from August 24 to September 4 at The Ngee Ann Kongsi Galleries, the exhibition marks his 17th solo exhibition and fourth at NAFA. Audiences are afforded insights into the artist’s ongoing evolution in his artistic practice that is based on intensive observation, research and experimentation.
81-year-old Ang defies age with his boundless energy that propels him to create, travel, and challenge himself to push boundaries. Driven by an insatiable curiosity, Ang is always in search of new approaches to materialize ideas, and does so by experimenting with different mediums, techniques, and expressions. This latest exhibition is a testament to his courage and persistence, revealing a sense of freespiritedness and emotional intensity, carried by vibrant colors and gestural brushstrokes, conveying stories close to his heart.
Breaking from his structured compositions, palette knife techniques and color schemes that he is known for, Ang maintains the core elements of his ‘signature’ style in “Prismatic,” defining a new chapter in his explorations with color and brushwork. Deliberate layers and visible brushstrokes add depth and nuance to the work, lending a dynamic and energetic quality while remaining semi-abstract. The results are not literal representations of the world around him but his inner world — personal interpretations of places and memories that are rich with emotional resonance, effectively transforming ordinary scenes into extraordinary visual experiences.
Ang’s works demonstrate how the subjective brings power to the arts, evoking empathy and inspiring contemplation. His depictions of landscapes, people, and memories, serve as a conduit between past and present—connecting generations through history and stories that provide catalysts for discussions.
“Prismatic: Ang Ah Tee” pays homage to artistic heritage and legacy, and illustrates the academy’s pioneering spirit of exploration, while inspiring growth through the arts. The exhibition also underscores NAFA’s commitment to regional arts through leading research, practice and development.
