Hindi ako nagtaka o nagulat nang ang Kapuso actor na si Alden Richards ay unti-unting nakilala at ngayon ay maituturing nang isa sa mga pinakasikat na artista sa Pilipinas kasama ang katuwang niyang si Maine Mendoza.

Bilang bahagi kasi ng trabaho ko sa Yahoo! Philippines noon, sinusubaybayan ko kung ano-ano ang mga hinahanap ng netizens sa aming search engine. Ilang linggo pa lamang matapos ipakilala ng GMA Network si Alden bilang leading man ni Louise delos Reyes sa “Alakdana,” sinearch agad ng Yahoo! users ang bagong heartthrob.

Jessica Soho named 2018 UP Gawad Plaridel Awardee for Journalism

The University of the Philippines (UP) College of Mass Communication has named Jessica Soho as the recipient of the UP Gawad Plaridel 2018—Outstanding Journalist Category.

Ms. Soho, a veteran broadcast journalist, is cited for her pioneering work in broadcast investigative journalism and for her insightful and courageous coverage of Philippine and world news. She holds the distinction of being the most awarded broadcast journalist in Philippine history with two hundred fifty-three (253) local awards and thirty-two (32) international awards to date. She is the first Filipina recipient of the highly acclaimed George Foster Peabody Award for her documentaries on the illegal trade of kidneys and the harrowing plight of Filipino boxers and is also a six-time recipient of the “Most Trusted News Presenter” award of Readers Digest Asia.

Manny V. Pangilinan on success: ‘No magic, no mystery’

There is no secret to success. No magic formula. It’s mostly good old fashioned hard work, said business leader Manuel V. Pangilinan during the 41st Commencement Exercises of the Manila Tytana Colleges held recently at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).

Speaking in front of some 300 graduates, Pangilinan said that “Success springs from old-fashioned values — values as fundamental as being honest and truthful — with yourself and with others. And so is being diligent, hard-working, and disciplined.”

Nang hagkan ko si Nanay Diding bago ako umalis pa-Maynila noong Oktubre, dumampi rin ang pangambang maaaring iyon na ang huli kong pagpapaalam sa kaniya. Sa kabila nito, nanaig ang aking pag-asang lalakas pa si Nanay at muli pa kaming magkikita.

Subalit dahil sa kaniyang edad at sakit, ilang panahon na ring mahina si Nanay. Noong Nobyembre 22, 2016, tuluyan na siyang lumisan. Sa pagpanaw ni Nanay, naging ulilang lubos na ako, na panganay niyang apo.

Sen. Tañada is new Bantayog chair

Bantayog ng mga Bayani Foundation announces the election of Senator Wigberto E. Tañada as the new chairperson of its Board of Trustees, effective September 29, 2016.

Senator Tañada replaces Ambassador Alfonso T. Yuchengco, who has been elevated to chair emeritus since August this year.

The 82-year-old former senator, popularly called Ka Bobby, comes to the Foundation with sterling qualifications. He is the son of the late former senator Lorenzo M. Tañada, often tagged as Philippine politics’ “grand old man.”

Ka Bobby often stood arm-in-arm with his father in many protest rallies staged in opposition to the Marcos dictatorship, suffering hosed water or tear-gas dispersal operations.

He served both as senator and congressman in the Philippine Congress. In 1991, he was with the group of senators under the leadership of then Senate President Jovito R. Salonga when the Senate rejected the renewal of the PHL-U.S. treaty on military bases.

Ka Bobby graduated from the Ateneo de Manila University, Manuel L. Quezon University, and Harvard Law School.

He is lead convenor of the Fair Trade Alliance.

He is also the chairman of the Philippine Working Group for an ASEAN Human Rights Mechanism, the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement, and the Lagawe Rural Bank in Ifugao. He is also the Chairman of Universal Motors Corporation, and is an Independent Director for Republic Cement & Building Materials, Inc., and Republic Cement Mindanao Inc.

Ka Bobby hails from Gumaca, Quezon.
