A hero’s sacrifice
Raising a family, especially in today’s economy, can be considered no less than an act of sacrifice — it is putting one’s life in service of others, facing hardships and trials at every turn, all in the name of giving one’s children a better and comfortable future.
This has been Charly Rivera’s journey, a father of four in Rodriguez, Rizal, who works as a BIDA Fiber agent together with his wife Jonalyn. Life has dealt them their fair share of obstacles, and Charly, as the head of the family, is no stranger to struggles.
“Mahirap talaga maging tatay. Dati nagguwardiya ako tapos gumigising ako ng 4 o’ clock para pumasok. 7 a.m. ang pasok ko; Pagdating ng hapon, out ko naman ay 7 p.m. Dumarating kami sa bahay gabi na rin. Medyo mahirap talaga. Sakripisyo talaga sa trabaho para sa pamilya,” Charly said.
Charly, at 51, is no longer in the prime of his youth. He contracted an infection from hours of standing and roving as a security guard and was left untreated for two years.
“Nagdu-duty kami sa gabi tapos sa araw may training. Natatakot ako magtanggal ng sapatos kasi mape-penalty kami. Bawal magtanggal ng sapatos. Naipit 'yong ugat sa paa ko, nangingitim pala 'yong ugat at di ko napansin. After two years, kumikirot na. Namaga siya at pumutok 'yong sugat habang naka-duty ako,” said Charly, sharing that he did not stop going to work even as he sought medical care.
Jonalyn, ever the reliable partner, didn’t let her husband struggle alone; She started as a Converge agent in 2017, selling its cable internet product which predated Converge’s flagship fiber-based postpaid products.
Life took a positive turn when the couple started with Converge. Even as Charly still held on to his security job, he was earning more as a Converge agent and at least he had a better handle on his work hours.
“Simula noon, guminhawa na rin talaga kasi medyo kumikita na kasi may trabaho ako at asawa ko may trabaho din. Tapos nakakabili na kami ng gamit. 'Yong bahay namin napapagawa din. 'Yong mga anak ko, medyo guminhawa sila kasi kumikita naman kami sa trabaho kaya sakripisyo talaga para may pagkukuhnan kami talaga,” he noted.
While other fathers’ experience with raising a family and sustaining a livelihood may not be as difficult as Charly’s, there is always an element of sacrifice in every journey. Whether it be a more relaxed schedule or an easier lifestyle, there is always a cost to every father’s choice to build a loving, comfortable home for the family.
At the center of it, is a father’s unending love and devotion.
“Mahal na mahal ko ang mga anak ko. Misis ko, mahal ko 'yan. Hinihingi ko lang sa kanila na mag-aral silang mabuti,” Charly ended.
The BIDA postpaid fiber is the most affordable postpaid plan of Converge. The product is now present in more than 95% of all the provinces and municipalities where Converge has presence in, and as of the first quarter of 2024, has 90,000 subscribers.
LG Hope Screens promote restoration for World Environment Day
Under a mission to create a Better Life for All, LG is committed to creating a sustainable future for the planet. As part of its commitment to raising awareness about crucial social and environmental issues, LG has been running the LG Hope Screen program in bustling pedestrian areas of two renowned cities – New York’s Times Square and London’s Piccadilly Circus. These eye-catching LG billboards have captured the attention of passersby, showcasing public service videos produced by international organizations and non-governmental organizations.
Through the Hope Screen program, LG is joining hands with the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) in the annual celebration of World Environment Day on June 5. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is hosting this year’s event, focusing on the critical topics of land restoration, desertification and drought resilience, emphasizing the message of “Our Land. Our Future.”
According to the United Nations, approximately 2 billion hectares of land are degraded worldwide, posing a significant impact on around 3.2 billion people globally. This degradation accounts for one-fifth of the Earth’s land area and affects 40 percent of the world’s population, disproportionately impacting those who lack the necessary resources and means to cope with the consequences.
LG Hope Screens broadcast World Environment Day videos from UNEP
This year’s World Environment Day provides a valuable platform to raise public awareness about this pressing issue and inspire action to safeguard the planet. From May 31 to mid-June, LG Hope Screens will broadcast UNEP-created videos that shed light on the detrimental consequences of rapid industrialization, contributing to the devastating effects of climate change. However, these videos also showcase inspiring reforestation initiatives from various parts of the world, urging viewers to actively participate in the restoration of our planet’s ecosystems.
LG Hope Screens have emerged as a powerful platform for initiating meaningful conversations and raising awareness about crucial social and economic issues. In April, on the occasion of Earth Day 2024, LG launched a captivating digital out-of-home campaign through its Times Square billboard, featuring mesmerizing anamorphic content. The campaign aimed to draw attention to the urgent need for protection of some of the world’s most vulnerable endangered and recovered species. Throughout the year, this ongoing campaign will continue to spotlight various species, starting with the snow leopard and subsequently featuring the bald eagle, Galapagos sea lion and reindeer later in the year.
Last October, to commemorate World Food Day, LG Hope Screens played a significant role in commemorating World Food Day. During this event, campaign videos produced by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization were broadcasted, emphasizing the crucial importance of water as a fundamental element for both sustenance and life itself. These videos aimed to raise awareness about the significance of water conservation in order to foster a more sustainable future.
LG will continue to run the Hope Screen program to foster initiatives for the betterment of the planet and the people living on it. (LG Newsroom)

Fellowship opened the special day, with the SGH Golf Cup held at Pradera Verde Golf and Country Club. Representatives from partner firms and friends happily spent the morning at the greens and gave their best swings here.
The major highlight of the event is the announcement of SGH Chairman Jaime "Jack" Uy that he is "passing the baton" to his sons Jansen and Justine, who are "taking the reins "with their official appointment as Group President and COO, and Executive Vice President, respectively.
Calling the event as both sentimental and monumental, Chairman Jack Uy looked back with humility at the past four decades with Jack’s Video World, as the business’ take-off point, and in the process expressed gratitude to all the partners who have played significant roles in making Savers Group the monumental entity that it is now.
Uy is confident that his next generation will “propel the companies under the Savers Group into higher, newer, bigger and brighter heights.”
While with his "semi-retirement," Chairman Jack Uy proudly takes the sidelights, with sons — President and COO Jansen and EVP Justine now on centerstage — he gave the assurance that “I will always make myself available not only to our team but to our partners, vendors, and customers like you.”
