Dear Ms. Cristina Santos Canonigo,

I am writing to you in connection with the following book:

Talumpati! Talumpati! Talumpati!

ISBN 971-846-052-7

Unang Limbag: December, 2006
Inilathala ng TCB Book Supply
Selling price at National Bookstore: 48 pesos

Specifically, I refer to the following speeches reproduced in the book:

Pananalig (Pangulong Ramon Magsaysay), pp. 51-52
Muling Maging Dakila (Pangulong Ferdinand E. Marcos), pp. 53-54
Mensahe sa Aking Mga Kababayan (Pang. Manuel L. Quezon), pp. 55-56

I was not born yesterday. The speeches enumerated above were taken from my blog. They were delivered in English, and I translated them into Tagalog. But no mention is made in the book, for which you have claimed copyright, of the original language in which the speeches appeared or of their translator.

Could it be that you made your own translations, and it just so happened that the words you used corresponded exactly with mine? But how do you explain the fact that the last words of “Sa Kabataan” (Onofre Pagsanghan), pp. 47-49, are the same as those of my post? I think it is too much of a coincidence that you acknowledge the same persons that I did in the exact same words that I used: “Thanks to Ronald Cabunagan and Francis Alvarez, SJ, for their assistance in obtaining the text.”

For your information, the content of this blog is protected by a Creative Commons license, which states that my posts are free to be copied, distributed and transmitted under certain conditions, of which the most relevant to this case are:

Attribution. You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor.
Noncommercial. You may not use this work for commercial purposes.
Any of the above conditions can be waived if you get permission from the copyright holder.

You have violated both of the conditions and I certainly did not grant permission because it was not sought. Hence, I demand that you pull out all the copies of the book from all distribution outlets by 30 September 2007. If you ignore this demand, then I will be forced to take legal action, not to mention use everything at my disposal—including the choice words I have refrained from employing thus far—to make sure that everyone who might possibly buy the book knows that you reap where you do not sow.

  1. Dear Von Totanes,
I read your open letter few days ago. I was terribly surprised. U know, so many students are contributing their researched works to me re: speeches, poems, essays. When I received speeches of Marcos, Magsaysay, Quezon, etc. I happily included them in my Talumpati book. I even said, “Naku, mabubuhay uli ang pangalan nila sa book ko.” In the speech of Onofre Pagsanhan, I saw the names of Cabunagan and Alvarez. I tried to contact them by calling all the same family names in the directory but no one seems to know them so I decided to retain their names the way they were written. Von, that was my greatest mistake! I became careless in including those speeches. Von, I am terribly sorry for causing you mental agony thinking that I stole your work. I’m willing to make amends with you and offer you some options, so at least I can compensate you in some way. God knows, Von, I never meant to offend you or grab credit for your work. It was an honest mistake, believe me. I am apologizing for causing you emotional disturbance. Sana Von, you’ll contact me so we can talk. This is my mobile phone # 09185166433. Am still in Cebu now. Next week I will be in Manila. This is my Mnla landline 7326559. May God enlighten our minds and show us the right path to settle everything for our mutual benefit. God bless.

    P.S.
    To my reading fans,
I’m sorry for the mistake I committed. Sa more than 100 books na naisulat ko in 24 years, this is the very first time na nakasakit ako ng damdamin ng kapwa ko manunulat. Sana’y mapatawad ninyo ako.

  2. C.S. Canonigo copying someone’s translations? It must be unintentional. She is a very intelligent woman…valedictorian and magna cum laude and a holder of 5 degrees, but she is so simple, humble, and unassuming. I know her, she is once my student.

  3. ninenok talaga?? bka naman d sinasadya… dba ang dami na ngang libro sa mga bookstors,… i think di yan sinasadya… ahmm, so far bkit di ko pa yata nabasa ang reaction ni von…

  5. I have nothing to say against Mrs. Christina C. Canonigo. Of so many people that she have helped, maybe if she has a mistake that could be a mark of being a human, not a perfect creature.

Why should this matter grow into big? Even if i have not seen her,im just one of her recepients of her generous heart. Mam thank you very much.

Im sorry kung medyo makulit ako…… Merry Christmas…
