Wanted: Commissioning Editor for Yahoo! Southeast Asia

Yahoo! Southeast Asia is looking for a Commissioning Editor to help support the production of English-language custom-branded micro-sites.

You’ll be required to identify and commission bloggers/writers to produce a variety of articles ranging from finance to event guides. That means you’ll need both an extensive list of contacts as well as a broad knowledge of various subjects.

The role also requires you to have strong editing skills to draw out a distinct and engaging editorial voice to satisfy the Yahoo! audience. Just as important — you need to be able to recognize this quality in other people’s writing.

Given the high expectations of our users, the role requires a professional with at least five years in an editorial role.

The job will also involve:

- Identifying strong bloggers and building a strong relationship with them
- Assessing pitches from bloggers
- Editing article submissions
- Commissioning photographers and illustrators
- Issuing contracts to bloggers
- Paying bloggers

The ideal candidate will have the following skills:

- More than 5 years in an editorial role, preferably in the magazine industry
- Strong relationships with prominent bloggers
- Ability to write and re-write in an engaging style
- Strong copy editing skills, knowledge of AP style is preferred

As part of your daily responsibilities, you will be at the forefront of driving our news articles, blogs, discussions, polls and community activities through social media networks with the goal of attracting a wider audience to Yahoo!.

You must have at least 3-5 years of editorial experience at a newspaper, magazine, wire service or online media site and be able to work under a tight deadline. Blogging and multimedia experience is also a must.

An established personal online brand is an ideal. As a power user in social media, you must have at least 300 followers on Twitter, at least 200 connections on LinkedIn and at least 400 friends on Facebook.

These past weeks, lagi kong naaalala ang Singapura Rasa. Halos isang buwan na rin kasi akong nandito sa Singapore. May training ako para sa bagong trabaho ko as editor sa Yahoo! Philippines.

Sa isang hotel ako nag-i-stay, at nilalakad ko lang pauwi sa gabi. Safe naman daw rito. Saka nasanay na rin ako nung nasa GMA pa ako, kasi madalas din kaming naglalakad pauwi noon. Pagdating sa hotel, kadalasan ay lumalabas ako ulit at kumakain sa Kopitiam at pagkatapos ay tumatambay ako roon o sa Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts para sa libreng WiFi.

Noong unang Biyernes ko rito, inilibre ako ilang kaibigan sa isang Filipino resto sa Lucky Plaza, ang tambayan ng mga Pinoy sa Singapore. Dalawang beses na rin akong nakakain sa Lau Pa Sat — na kinaroroonan Jolly V, kung saan ang manok ay lasang Chicken Joy. Walang Jollibee rito, at ang Jollibeans naman ay mga inumin at kakanin ang itinitinda. (Wala ring Kopi Roti rito, at walang kanin ang McDo at KFC. Wala ring Bench at Artwork. At walang Kapuso channel sa TV sa hotel. Andami kong hinahanap, no?)

Pero yung mga pagkaing nasa menu siguro noon ng Singapura Rasa, puwede ko nang kainin dito lagi. Paborito ko ang lemon chicken rice at pineapple rice. Lagi rin akong kumakain sa vegetarian stall ng food court sa building ng office namin.

May mga kaibigan akong dito nagtatrabaho, at nagkita na kami ng ilan sa kanila. May mga nakilala at nakakausap din akong mga kababayan dito. Nakikipagkuwentuhan ako at nakikinig sa mga kuwento ng kanilang buhay sa Singapore.

Kahit sandali lang ako rito, naranasan ko ang buhay-OFW. Mahirap din pala. Nakaka-miss ang Pinas, ang mga kapamilya at ang kapuso kong sa text, YM, at tawag ko lang nakakasama ngayon. First time naming magkahiwalay ni M nang ganito katagal.

Kahit masaya sa office dahil gusto ko ang trabaho, mababait sa akin ang mga kasamahan ko, at marami ring Pilipino, pag pauwi na ay medyo nasa-sad ako. Feeling ko mag-isa lang ako. Inaaliw ko na lang ang sarili ko sa panonood ng mga tao at pagtingala sa buildings at sa makukulay na ilaw na nakasabit sa kalsada. Bago matulog, mga bampira ng The Vampire Chronicles ni Anne Rice ang kasama ko. Lalo pang sad towards the weekend at medyo paubos na ang allowance. Tipong patingin-tingin, di naman makabili. Noong Huwebes, nagpa-duktor pa ako. Pero okay lang naman ako.

Medyo masaya this week kasi dumating ‘yung ibang colleagues ko na nagte-training din. Nitong nakalipas na dalawang araw, may mga kasabay na akong maglakad-lakad o maglagalag. Tapos kanina, may masayang kita-kita kami ng mga Pilipinong blogger na nasa Singapore. Ikukuwento ko na lang next time, with borrowed photos. Medyo mahaba na itong first installment ng Singapura chronicles ko, eh.
