Twenty four years ago, our people toppled a tyrant. On February 25, 2010 let us re-tell their stories.

On Thursday, we are enjoining all young Filipinos to blog about the stories of the real heroes of EDSA: our parents, grandparents, ates and kuyas, titos and titas, ninong and ninangs.

We may have been too young then or were not even born yet, but we can ask them to recount their tales of real-life heroism to us. What prompted them to join the uprising? What were their thoughts and feelings? What did they wear, eat, chant? How did it feel to be able to be surrounded by overwhelming unity and patriotism among millions of other heroes marching in the streets on those three historic days.

Since EDSA was mainly about the people’s resistance to martial law, you can ask them their experience during the martial law era, how they fought, even before the culmination of the people’s mass movement that was the EDSA People Power Uprising. You may also post old photos, artworks and/or anti-martial law memorabilia.

Link your blog entries to this post and grab the button below by copying the link to mark your participation. We will start posting links of entries in our website at exactly 12:00 noon on February 25.

On February 25, let us give proper honor and citation to the millions of Filipinos who made EDSA People Power possible.

Babae
Inang Laya

Pa’no nahubog inyong isipan at tanggaping kayo’y mga libangan

Pa’no nahubog inyong isipan at tanggaping kayo’y mga libangan

About the martial law period they have nothing to remember, and they wont know it when they see it.”

Ferdinand Marcos came to power in the Philippines in a coup d’état in 1972 and ruled absolutely, in the name of order, until his dramatic overthrow in February of 1986. This study examines how the authoritarian regime of Marcos remained in power, sometimes in the face of massive opposition, for 14 years. Repressive regimes may seem undesirable, but they are often able to elicit the support of significant sectors of society. Marcos was able to maintain authoritarian rule through the support of bureaucrats, businessmen, and the military–all with the assistance of the United States government. He maintained this network of support through a patron-client system with a centralized bureaucracy as its power and resource base. In order to reward his supporters, he expanded the authority of government. But to minimize the political cost of expansion, he maintained the legal and constitutional forms of democracy. The Philippine experience in despotism is not unique; many Third World countries are under authoritarian rule. This subtle and nuanced analysis, therefore, provides an examination of the levers of power available to absolute rulers, to better understand the political economy of authoritarianism.

Martyrdom of a People’s Leader

To his last breath, Bonifacio was devoted to the main objective of the KKK, which was separation from Spain. Aguinaldo and his clique, in contrast, would not long after yield their arms in exchange for P400,000 and accept exile to Hong Kong and the continuation of Spanish sovereignty in accordance with the Pact of Biak na Bato, in which Pedro Paterno negotiated for the Spanish colonial government.

By Alexander Martin Remollino
http://www.bulatlat.com/news/3-13/3-13-martyrdom.html

Among the more tragic chapters in the history of the Filipino people is the execution of Andres Bonifacio, founder of the Kataas-taasan, Kagalang-galangang Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan (KKK), which began to wage a revolutionary struggle against Spanish colonial rule in 1896, on Mt. Buntis, Maragondon, Cavite on May 10, 1897.

Unlike Jose Rizal and Macario Sakay, who were executed by soldiers of occupying powers, Bonifacio died in the hands of fellow Katipuneros. This makes his death doubly tragic.

But why did the Supremo, as Bonifacio came to be known among his fellow Katipuneros, have to die — and in such a manner?

In his book The Price of Freedom, Gen. Jose Alejandrino, one of the officers who served under Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, wrote of Bonifacio’s death, thus: “In crying over the spilled blood of Andres Bonifacio, let our grief be assuaged by the thought that it was not shed in vain, because it served to establish firmly our much-needed unity for the overthrow of the forces of tyranny, in the same way that Rizal’s blood tinged with scarlet the rays of our early dawn.” There is in this passage the implicit suggestion that at the time of his death, Bonifacio had become a divisive force, therefore a threat to the Revolution — and had to be eliminated.

But was he really a threat to the Revolution?

On May 10, 1897, Emilio Aguinaldo’s men murdered the founder of the Katipunan. Patriot Apolinario Mabini described the assassination of Bonifacio as “the first triumph of personal ambition over true patriotism…”

One of my Tinig.com friends, walangdila, today wrote in his PinoyExchange wireless journal: “ei nice date 2day.. 02022002 never will it happen again in my lifetime.. gotta do something special…” I could only wonder what interesting thing did he do as I remain on duty here at the office. (Well, if you could consider going to work on a holiday as something special, then I did as walangdila did. However, staying on duty on supposedly special days is an ordinary thing for me.

Another thing that could make this day special, on the other hand, is that it is the anniversary of the establishment of the first labor union in the country. Formed in 1902, Union Obrera Democratica was instrumental in fighting the American colonizers.

One hundred years later, the colonizers are here again, but just for military exercise and training, the government maintains. As we hear US President Bush say “If they do not act, America will,” the Defense Secretary says the Philippines will not allow the US to impose what it wants on us. Uh, well, as if President Arroyo didn’t look like a movie fan when he met with Bush earlier.

Prof. Luis Teodoro in his column in Today said: “For those who argue that the world has changed, and that what used to be referred to as US imperialism has passed from the stage of history, are correct but are at the same time also mistaken.”

He said Bush’s stern warning “in fact presumes that the US has the right to do anything it wants, when and wherever it wants.”

Meanwhile, while Philippine government officials insist that the US troops will leave after six months, an American military official recently said that the length of their troop’s stay here will be decided upon evaluation after six months. Now, tell me, who’s the boss?

I could only agree with my professor when he wrote “Listen to Bush again. In his words is the same drum roll of empire to which US troops marched into Manila (a hundred years ago).”

At any rate, it is still a nice day. I’m going home now.
