New DepEd Secretary

January 16, 2011 update: The current DepEd secretary is Bro. Armin A. Luistro, FSC. He was appointed by President Noynoy Aquino in June 2010.

Edilberto de Jesus is the new Department of Education secretary. The Palace formally announced his appointment this afternoon. An experienced educator and not a politician, he is president of the Far Eastern University and member of the board of the Ateneo de Manila University. He also served as peace process adviser during the Aquino administration.

De Jesus takes over the position vacated by former Senator Raul Roco. Unlike Foreign Affairs secretary Blas Ople, the new DepEd secretary appears acceptable to various sectors, including the student movement. National Union of Students of the Philippines president and Tinig.com columnist Mong Palatino said while they clash with de Jesus on the tuition increase issue, the new secretary is their ally in the anti-ROTC issue.

Incidentally, de Jesus is the husband of my former boss, Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility executive director Melinda Quintos de Jesus.

The Love I Lost (But

One summer day just before dawn, I stepped out of our town’s only public hospital where my ailing Tatay was confined. It was very difficult for me to do that?leave Nanay alone to take care of Tatay?but I really had to. Of course, they also wanted me to stay with them as much as possible. But the three of us all knew that I needed to stay in the city and finish what I had started in UP. We were all looking forward to my graduation. Read entire article here.

Syempre, sumaludo agad ang bagong foreign secretary ng Pilipinas, si Blas Ople: “In the sense that this determination can help staunch the flow of finances and other support for local armed groups and thus, help prevent further conflict and additional loss of life, it is a welcome development.”

TXTPower: Texter's Org, Consumer's Force

People Power 2 was a big party for us texters. During those four days and four nights, we marched, laughed, chanted and texted our way to EDSA and Mendiola until Joseph Estrada — widely believed to be corrupt and inefficient — was ousted from the presidential palace.

During the period, our generation, the Filipino Generation Txt, evolved from the mostly gimmick-centered techies to concerned technology-savvy young citizens. We discovered that our cell phones and personal computers could actually be compatible with concepts such as people’s rights, truth, democracy, justice, and power of the people. Continue reading

Waiting

Linggo nang hapon. Universe Cafe, Glorietta 4, Makati City.
